DFFC vs. Western, SMFI Poultry battles SPDC, and MCF test SMPFC

DFFC and Western Feedmill will try to outsmart and outrun each other this Sunday, October 5, 2008 if they want to improve on their team standing. Both teams are tied-up at second place with 2-1 win-loss record behind pacesetting SPDC with an unblemished slate of 3-0. The second game will feature the league leader, SPDC, versus the resurgent SMFI Poultry. SPDC again will rely on their twin towers, Jimbo Baba and Merwen Remocaldo. SMFI meanwhile expects steady game from Ericson Irlandez, James Gutierrez, forward Dandan Morandante and shooting guard Jimmy Dacalano. The third game will pit winless SMPFC, itching to notch their first win, versus slumping Mindanao Cargo Forwarders. Prolific scorer, RJ Rulona, will again lead MCF with Mark Anthony Yap setting up the play at the point guard position. SMPFC will have their hands full if they want to beat MCF. Joy Alcoberes will again provide the muscle inside the paint for SMPFC. Adrian "Doc" Basoc will have to bring his "A" game with Paolo Mesias providing the speed. SMPFC's playing coach and team captain Jerry "Jer-jer" Demegillo declares his team readiness to play this Sunday.

DFFC edged SMPFC

DFFC came from behind to snatch the victory over the hardfighting SMPFC squad 58-56. It was another close finish for SMPFC but the breaks did not go their way. SMPFC's center Adrian "doc" Basoc fouled out with 3:50 to go in the fourth quarter. With less than a minute left, SMPFC was ahead by 4 points when Rogelio Papa managed to steal the ball from SMPFC's Julius Nulla and scored on a lay-up. SMPFC failed to make a basket in their possession. In the succeeding play, Allan Barbarona of DFFC drive strong towards the basket squeezing past a phalanx of defenders scoring a goal plus a foul from Joy Alcoberes. Barbarona scored on the bonus free throw to put DFFC ahead by 1 point, time down to 26 seconds. SMPFC immediately inbounded and made a long pass to Paolo Mesias who scored on a drive to the basket to put SMPFC back ahead by 1 point, with 18 seconds left. Then, Rogelio Papa scored another goal for DFFC with a foul from Julius Baring with 4 seconds remaining time. Papa made the free throw to give DFFC a 2-point lead. With no timeout left, SMPFC was forced to throw a desperation shot as time runs out.
DFFC's Allan Barbarona lead all scorers with 18 points. Rogelio Papa and Ismael Mohammad contributed 13 points a piece for DFFC. Joy Alcoberes topscored for SMPFC with 17 points. Julius Nulla added 11 points while Paolo Mesias chipped in 10 points.
It was another sorry loss for SMPFC who remained winless in the tournament in 3 tries. DFFC improved its win-loss record to 2-1.

SPDC dominated Western Feedmill

SPDC showed its vaunted defense and might underneath to remain unbeaten upending Western Feedmill 64-58. SPDC post lead as high as 16 points in the first half but Western feedmill keeps on coming back behind Patrick Gabi, Onsit Arcillo and Nelson Traya. However, SPDC always has an answer from Jimbo Baba and Merwen Remocaldo. Jimbo Baba paced SPDC with 16 points. Merwen Remocaldo added 12 points and Kominie Macaraya contributed 9 points. Patrick Gabi scored 10 points, all in the second half for Western Feedmill.

It was the third straight victory for SPDC, the only unbeaten team in the tourney. Western Feedmill dropped to 2-1 win-loss record.

SMFI Poultry stunned Mindanao Cargo Forwarders

SMFI Poultry notched its first win in the tournament at the expense of Mindanao Cargo Forwarders 57-53. It was a close game with the halftime score dead even at 28-all. MCF outscored SMFI in the third canto 15-10 behind the guns of RJ Rulona to give themselves a five-point lead going to the last quarter. MCF still leads by 7 points with time down to 1 minute and 50 seconds. However, Jimmy Dacalano scored on a lay-up to cut the lead down to 5. In the ensuing play, MCF failed to convert and Dandan Morandante immediately passed the ball to Jimmy Dacalano but instead of going in for the lay-up opted to shoot a 3-pointer which he made. MCF lead down to two with 40 seconds left to play. MCF shoot hurriedly and again failed to convert on their possession. Ericson Irlandez grabbed the rebound then passed to James Gutierrez who slowly dribbled the ball downcourt. James Gutierrez then passed the ball to the cutting Ericson Irlandez who converted the shot plus a foul. Scored tied at 53-all. Ericson Irlandez converted the bonus foul shot giving SMFI a one-point lead with 26 seconds remaining. Ericson Irlandez played almost without relief and provided the leadership to keep SMFI in the game. James Gutierrez then got a steal from Mark Anthony Yap then passes to Jimmy Dacalano for a fastbreak lay-up. Time down to 10 seconds with SMFI now ahead by 3 points 56-53. MCF's Resthie Rubio fires a three-pointer but is off-the-mark. James Gutierrez got the loose ball and was fouled. James Gutierrez converted 1 of 2 free throws for the final count of 57-53.

James Gutierrez and Jimmy Dacalano scored 18 points each and Ericson Irlandez added 17 points for SMFI poultry. MCF's RJ Rulona led his team with 20 points and Mark Anthony Yap contributing 9 points.

SPDC and Western face off; SMFI battles MCF; and SMPFC clashes with DFFC

Anticipate a heckuva of a fight this Sunday between the two league leading unbeaten teams, SPDC and Western Feedmill. SPDC and Western Feedmill will square off at 10:00am after the game between tailender SMFI Poultry, still winless after 2 games, and the unpredictable Mindanao Cargo Forwarders (MCF). The third game will feature another bottom dweller, winless SMPFC, versus erstwhile leader DFFC, who is aching to bounce back after a sorry loss to MCF last Sunday.
Western Feedmill is expected to use its speed versus the much taller SPDC squad. SMPFC and SMFI are hoping to notch their first win in the tournament while DFFC and MCF desires to improve their current position.

SPDC overpowered SMPFC

SPDC relied on its tall frontline to turn back hard fighting SMPFC in a low scoring ballgame 39-34. SMPFC kept the game close all thoughout but didn't get the needed breaks in the endgame.
SPDC slotman Jimbo Baba provided the firepower scoring 18 points, 12 ponts in the second half after scoring 6 points at halftime. No players from SMPFC scored in double figures although they outscored SPDC in the fourth quarter 13-11.

Western Feedmill Dumps SMFI Poultry

Western Feedmill made mince meat of SMFI Poultry 64-48. SMFI never came close after the halftime score of 24-20 with Western leading only by four points. Western outscored SMFI 17-7 in the third quarter and 23-21 in the fourth quarter. Western used its speed and pressure defense to capitalized on the ball handling errors of SMFI.
Nelson Traya and Jun Tubias got 10 points apiece for Western Feedmill. For the second straight game, Jimmy Dacalano shooting still went sour converting on 3 of 13 from behind the three-point arc. Jimmy Dacalano contributed 13 points and Ericson "superbull" Irlandez bulldozed his way to 12 points to lead the losing team.

Mindanao Cargo upsets DFFC

Mindanao Cargo Forwarders shocked opening day winner, DFFC, 49-46. The game was a close fought contest with DFFC leading at halftime by a single point 16-15. However, in the fourth quarter MCF pour it all outscoring DFFC 26-18 behind the heroics of RJ Rulona and Mark Anthony Yap. MCF thus improve its record to 1-1. DFFC suffered its first loss and tied its tormentor at 1-1 win-loss record.
MCF scoring leader RJ Rulona topscored with 18 points with Mark Anthony Yap contributing 10 points. Also scoring in double figure is Resthie Rubio with 10 points coming from two converted three-point shot. Only Allan Barbarona scored in double digit for DFFC with 13 points.

DFFC Demolished SMFI Poultry Operations




The third game proved to be an outclassed as DFFC demolished SMFI Poultry Operations with a score of 61-33. DFFC started hot, racing to a 10-0 lead and never looked back. So evident was the balance scoring of DFFC with Renan Estorgio scoring 10 points to lead his team. Rogelio Papa, Allan Barbaronna and Rhyjel Amancio added 8 points each. Only five players scored for SMFI Poultry with Dandan Morandante emerging as the only player in his team with double digit contribution of 18 points. Recuperating Dr. Eric "superbull" Irlandez despite playing less than 100% scored 8 markers. Jimmy "the archer" Dacalano suffered a poor shooting game and scored only 3 points. DFFC surprised SMFI with a trapping defense early on and forced them to commit numerous turn-overs and errors all game. SMFI vowed to make good in their next game against another powerhouse, Western Feedmill.

Western Feedmill Clobbered SMPFC




In the second game, SMPFC put up a gallant stand until the end of the 3rd quarter before succumbing to a powerhouse Western Feedmill team in the fourth quarter with the final score of 58-41. Patrick "The Prince" Gabi paced the winning Western Feedmill with 18 big markers while Dennis Tormis and Nelson Traya tossed in 9 and 8 points respectively. Adrian "Doc" Basoc topscored for the losing squad with 14 points. Paolo Mesias contributed 9 points and Joy Alcoberes 8 points for SMPFC. Only six players scored for the losing team. SMPFC played with a lot of heart and guts but in the end Western Feedmill still emerged victorious.

SPDC Beats Mindanao Cargo Forwarders






The kick off game of the tournament featured Sirawan-Polomolok Development Corporation (SPDC) vs. Mindanao Cargo Forwarders (MCF). SPDC is a pre-tournament favorite and live up to its billing by walloping MCF to the score of 70-55. Erwin Betinol of SPDC scored 22 points to lead his team to victory. Betinol was supported in scoring by Merwen Remocaldo who tossed in 12 points. No other player in SPDC scored in double figure. Robert John Rulona topscored for the losing squad with 26 points. No other MCF player scored in double digit.

One Big Happy Kapamilya


The most awaited 1st SMFI Interplant Basketball Tournament will start this September 14, 2008, this will be a three-month long tournament. Opening Ceremonies will be held at the Garden Oasis Gym on Septembet 14, 2008 (Sunday) 8am. The event will be attended by the different team managers and plant owners. The theme of the said tournament is "One Big Happy Kapamilya!!!". The tournament aims to enhance solidarity thru a friendly competition of basketball. The participants of the said event are a merry-mix of processing plant crews, warehouse crews, poultry sales, finance, poultry operations, feeds operations, HR, toll plant owners and SMPFC managers. Mr. Art Adle will lead the invocation, followed by Mr. Jimmy R. Dacalaño, for some inspirational messages. To follow immediately will be the oath of sportsmanship and drawing of lots from the different team representatives to determine the playing order of the day. Ceremonial toss will be witnessed by our different Toll Partners, namely, DIZON (SPDC), CLAUDIO (DFFC) and TAGALOG (Mindanao Cargo). The steering committee for the tournament will be Mr. Jer-Jer Demegillio, Ericson Irlandez, Jimmy Dacalaño, Chabi Ros and June Agustin. The said tournament will be officiated by BAP referees. All teams are requested to come on time with their respective uniforms and of course with their respective MUSE(S).

Don't count out Mindanao Cargo Forwarders

Equally talented Mindanao Cargo Forwarders is expected to figure in the race for the championship round. Headed by Capt. Ball Robert John Rulona, the squad is composed of youngsters with run and gun attitude. The team is banking on their razzle dazzle type of play to defeat their opponents. The squad includes Mark Anthony Yap, Jozell Barrete, Paulo Barias, Vincent Acebu, Dwaine Jorge Culaba, Arniel Maglasang, Mauris Lapiz, Rolando Melano, Arniel Libre, Morie Sonzona and Resthie Rubio.

SPDC the team to beat


Team Manager Chabi Ros has furnished the league organizers SPDC's roster of players. Leading the squad is Jing Apang with veterans Danilo Antalan, Armando Babao, and Renato Omlero providing support. Erwin Betinol will provide the needed firepower. Composing the team are Badrey Abubacar, Jimbo Baba, Jerry But, Abe Deporos, Limuel Lanutan, Kominie Macaraya and Merwen Remocaldo.

SMFI Poultry Operation bares line up

SMFI Poultry Operation has finalized and submitted its official list of players. Bannered by Dr. Ericson "superbull" Irlandez, SMFI poultry operation team is a mix of aging veterans and young blood. Outside firepower will be provided by Jimmy "JRD" Dacalaño, Jim Paul "JP" Oceña and McCorlign "Macky" Virtudazo. Slasher and scoring machine Julius Ceasar "Dandan" Morandante is the go-to-guy when points are needed quickly. Power inside the paint will be provided by Dondon "hatchet" Baluran, Donald "duckie" Doronio and James Guttierez. Rommel "RKV" Virtucio will be their court general directing the play. This powerhouse team includes Ruben "GP" Azuelo, Faustino "Tino" Barias III, Amor "otso-otso" Gornez, Virgil "silingan" Lebante, Ferdinand Molina, and Onchie "hobbit" Nalangan.

SMPFC fit and ready


SMPFC skipper Jerry "Jer-jer" Demegillo declares his team fit and ready to do battle with the league's favorites come September 14, 2008. Arnel "spitfire" Masinading will be the team's point guard. Power forward Julius Baring, Joy Alcoberes and Center Adrian "Doc" Basoc will supply the needed muscle in the paint. Speed will be provided by Paolo Mesias and CKAG's Julius Nulla. Other team members expected to contribute are Ronald Lara, Cocoy Balucos, Philmar Bagolor, Arce Cuevas, Jerel Palomata, Jason Loquellano, and Many Lor.

First SMFI Davao Interplant Basketball Tournament

Six teams will be competing in the first SMFI Davao Basketball Tournament. The six teams are SMFI-Poultry Operations of bullstrong forward Doc Eric Irlandez, Great Foods Solutions (GFS) team of skipper Jerry "Jer-jer" Demegillo, Sirawan-Polomolok Development Corporation (SPDC) of Chabi Ros, the powerhouse Mindanao Cargo Forwarders team, Davao Fresh Foods Corporation (DFFC) team of Engr. Jun Agustin, and the Western Feedmill team bannered by Nelson Traya. The tournament has a double round robin elimination system. The top four teams after the elimination round advances to the semifinals. The two teams with the highest winning record after the elimination round will have a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals knockout phase. The winningest team will be facing the fourth qualifier while the second qualifier will be fitted against the third qualifier.

The basketball tournament opening is scheduled on September 14, 2008 at Garden Oases Basketball Court in Bo. Obrero, Davao City. The games will be played every Sunday. Semifinals is set on November 23, 2008 with the finals to be played on November 30, 2008.
